I want to know what specialisation options there are each academic year, how coding heavy it is, how much is based on software engineering practices and how much technical freedom is available in a typical project.
Hiya - happy to provide some insight here. The yearly structure for the tech consulting degree apprenticeship is organised around a timetable set by your apprenticeship provider. You will complete modules on various topics such as Solution Architecture, Data Comms, Systems Development, and Applied Data Modelling, with assessments and coursework at the end of each module. This will all be explained during your onboarding.
Alongside your study, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of client projects, for example working on automating time consuming tasks, or building proof of concepts. There's no typical day to day, as it will depend on your project - for example, coding could be part of the role, but the extent of software engineering practices involved will depend on the specific client engagement. Technical freedom in projects is encouraged, so you can explore different competencies before specialising. You will receive lots of training and opportunities to develop your personal skillset, allowing you to build a career path that aligns with your passions and skills. If you already have certain skills or interests, then it's great to share this with your team so that they can help find the best projects for you to work on. Hope that helps!
As an apprentice are you set client work by the firm or do you get to be specific about it - I want to make sure I'm specialising in code-heavy facing projects/delivery teams. I've already decided this as a passion, will this be a good opportunity for me?
It's a bit of both! Tech consulting would align with your interests, but note that project allocation will be based on your experience, interests and team resourcing constraints at the time. I would recommend communicating your passion for coding early on, so that your team can help align your projects with your interests. There are also lots of opportunities to get involved in testing and developing projects outside of your client deliverables, and extensive learning courses you can complete to further develop your skillset. From my experience, I found the apprenticeship was a great way to develop a variety of skills, while also allowing me to shape my own career 😊
