Hi, what a good question to start off. Everyone will be different but for me, I work on around 5/6 different clients every day from various tasks such as checking in on their tax return status to delivering a client update via a phone call. No two days are the same for me.

Hi Aqmar, the day to day can change massively based on so many different factors. We have a number of different teams within tax which all have slightly different workflows and so they day to day is slightly different. Can I ask whether you'll be joining as a grad or as a school leaver?

What division of Tax do you specialise in? Transfer Pricing, Corporate Tax, VAT or something else?

Hi there, I work in International Tax and my day to day changes all the time! I could be drafting analysis on client transactions, listening in on client calls, coordinating with different EY firms around the world where the structuring is cross border and others!

How do the UK&I and FS tax divisions differ in the day to day? Is the work the same with different clients? Do the divisions ever work with one another?

As a masters graduate, can i also apply for the tax graduate program or is that just for Bachelors degree graduates?

  • Anonymous

Hi Amelia. FS work solely with financial institutes like banks, hedge funds, brokers etc, UK&I work with everyone else. Sometimes FS and UK&I cross over yes.

Hi all, thanks for the replies! I am joining as a grad and have graduated in law and currently interning within insurance. With how vast tax is, what could be expected?

  • Anonymous

Tax is pretty vast yes - you could be placed in an Energy Team focusing on wind farms acquisitions, could be in VAT or People Advisory working alongside tax return prep teams - it is very varied and will depend which team you apply to

Within tax at EY, what could you say is the biggest challenge coming into 2024 and what can be reflected from this year within the industry?

  • Anonymous

Aqmar - this sounds very like an EY interview question!!

If you are given a team and find work isn’t aligned with your interests, does EY allow movement across teams?

  • Anonymous

Yes you can move within the firm. For example, when I joined the firm I joined as part of the operational taxes team but moved to the personal tax team as it was more aligned with my personal interests. It all depends on the business needs at the time but typically the firm will be able to accommodate a move if you are interested.

Hi Sam - if you are on a grad programme, you are required to remain within that team until your professional qualifications are completed. After this point, there are always plenty of opportunities to transfer, take on secondments and lateral moves.

Thanks Ryan, experience builds character I suppose! I have seen changes within insurance that becomes a massive obstacle such as legislations. Do you think this affects a lot of your day to day work and if so what support are you given?

  • Anonymous

We have an enormous amount of support within EY that provides updates on tax legislations, budgetary decisions etc. We receive alerts with the latest rates, allowances etc and can use these in client conversation to create further planning opportunities.

That’s sounds brilliant! Another question would be, how is the rotation like on the graduate program, will they be given mentors and opportunity to shadow?

  • Anonymous

Perhaps not a question I can readily answer - within my team, there are no rotation opportunities but I have heard of this in other teams such as GCS (Global Compliance Services) where grads get a 6 week rotation say into Immigration Tax team. EY place a heavy focus on you professional development and support you through out your professional training - this takes up a lot of time!!

I have been speaking to some employees at EY about their experiences, and I am curious about yours. What has been the highlight of your career so far that makes tax at EY unique?

  • Anonymous

For me, I made the decision to transfer from Corporate Tax into People Advisory (Global Mobility Tax). I have found this to be far more rewarding (for me) as I can see the direct impact my work has on an individuals live. I.e. I help people who are moving overseas for work - this is a pretty daunting situation to be in. I provide a constant support mechanism to these people and help to navigate them through the tricky tax landscape of international tax, whilst keeping them compliant in the UK. I find this very rewarding when their move abroad goes without a hitch (from a tax point of view at least)

That sounds excellent! It means the world to me as I am also currently a foreign worker who sometimes get lost at sea with taxes and it’s processes. With that, do people advisory work require a lot of skill? What type of person would you think fit your teams line of work.

  • Anonymous

A people person. There is a lot of technical work, especially dealing with overseas tax laws. But EY has offices all over the world - I regularly deal with non UK teams for advice on a daily basis! So something with empathy would be a good fit in People Advisory - at the heart of what we do it helping people!

Thank you so much! Perhaps one of my last questions. How is the working environment like? How supported do you and your colleagues feel at work when it comes to being your authentic self.

  • Anonymous

This is massive for EY, We pride ourselves on bringing your whole self to work. Whatever your background, race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation - everyone has a home at EY. Someone in our office has pink hair. I myself have some tattoos - everyone is welcome. EY have a very strong DE&I initiative with support networks spanning a massive range of areas including disability, parents (EY Family Netwrok), faith. So much is going on in this space at EY.
