Assurance is similar to audit
Ah okay! And actuarial?
In the sense that you're giving clients assurance of what their financial statements say. Actuarial is to do with risk management. In actuarial there are 3 departments: Life insurance, general and pension. It's entirely based around insurance
Ah! Alright that makes sense!
Whereas assuarance is more like checking different companies financial statements etc. I recommend actuarial!
How do you find the actuarial programme at EY? And what does a day in the role of an actuarial consultant looks like?
It's pretty good. You get 42 study days a year. You get your exams and study material paid for. I spend a lot of time on excel
That sounds fantastic - did you come from the same background? Or did you study something else?
Although there are all sorts of opportunities to code and do all that kind of stuff. I did economics and econometrics
Great! I come from a hospitality and tourism background - so my only worry is how I would adjust to that change!
Do you have a maths A level?
When you start out on the actuarial program - they do give you training right?
Yeah
I did maths - but not A levels. It was a different qualification as I completed it in Perth, Western Australia!
At degree level?
The maths was more of a Year 12 level !
You need the equivalent of a maths A-level to qualify as an actuary. You may need to check if you have the qualification before applying
Alright thanks Matt!
Good luck
Thank you!
