Hi, my name is Yulan and I'm a PhD candidate in Civil Engineering set to graduate in 2024. I'm really interested in pursuing a career as an R&D Tax Advisor at EY, and I think my technical background could be a valuable asset in this role. However, since I only have internship experience and no prior work experience, I believe that I would need to apply for a graduate scheme in Tax. I've heard that the graduate scheme covers different areas of Tax. Although I'm open to learning about all aspects of Tax, I am wondering if there's a way to focus on R&D Tax if I will be able to join the graduate scheme? Many thanks, Yulan.
I think a Graduate programme would definitely be a good option for you! In terms of focussing on one space you will be asked for a preference during your application of which business are you wish to focus on. However, the area of Tax you will be allocated to will be down to different factors.
You may be able to flag your preference throughout the application process but it cant be guaranteed you will be offered a role in that area.
Hi Sean,
Thank you for letting me know. It is very useful! Just a follow-up question:
If I am not offered a role in my preferred area, would I still have the opportunity to gain experience in R&D Tax through rotations and land in the role after graduate scheme?
I'm sorry if I sounded repetitive in asking about the possibility of landing a role in R&D Tax - it's just that this is an area that I'm really passionate about and would love to explore further :)
Hi Yulan, no problem at all! It might be a good idea to keep an eye on our Events page for any upcoming Tax focused events - https://www.ey.com/en_uk/careers/students/events-and-contacts.
I would also advise that you make your application to the Tax Graduate programme and then at the earliest appropriate opportunity you can flag your preference and passion for R&D Tax. This will allow the team to do their best to try and make sure you are allocated to that area if possible before you are allocated! Again, this cannot be guarenteed.
Hi Sean, thank you for your understanding and for the helpful advice!
I will definitely keep an eye on the Events page and try to attend any Tax-focused events that are relevant to my interests. I appreciate your suggestion to apply to the Tax Graduate programme and express my passion for R&D Tax at the earliest appropriate opportunity.
I understand that there are no guarantees, but I'm excited to explore the opportunities available at EY and learn more about the Tax team! Thanks again for your time and insights.
