If you had a redo would you have done anything different/ approaches tasks differently in your graduate year?

Vidhant M. Transaction Diligence And Analytics Graduate

    Hi Charlotte,

    Really good question!

As background, I work in SaT - Transaction Diligence and we study for the Chartered Accountant qualification during the graduate scheme.
In your first year of exams, it's about bringing people up to speed with the foundation of accounting. It's quite difficult to grasp the full picture during deals at this stage. Near the end of your second year is when things start to click during projects as you complete more advanced exams.

Advice I would give - and this is general for any service line - is to try to grasp these 'big picture' concepts earlier on in your first year. Try to do some extra reading around your service line and speak to senior colleagues to understand the process and what the team is trying to achieve.

It is definitely easier said than done but you will start to have a bigger appreciation for the work you are carrying out day-to-day because you will start to understand the 'why' behind everything you're doing. As a result, you will know the stage you're at during your projects and will have the 'goal posts' in mind, enabling you to be more proactive as you start to understand the direction towards the ultimate goal.

Hope this helps - happy to answer any follow ups.

    Kind regards,
    Vid
