Hello, My name’s James and I’m in Y11 in high school. I’d like to become a Tax accountant and I do not know where to start. I’ve been researching accounting firms in my area and apprenticeships/training opportunities they offer. Please can I have some advice on what I should do after school? I’m looking for apprenticeships and also looking at doing A levels as it seems that practices mostly want people after college. My dream is to train with one of big accounting firms. Please can I have some advice on what I should do after school to give me best chance? Thank you very much for your time. James Austin
Hi James
Thank you very much for your question and that's great that you want to become a tax accountant!
My advice to you would be to complete your A Levels (or equivalent) and then at the start of Year 13, apply for apprenticeships. I would note that at EY, we do not require you to have completed any specific A Levels (or equivalent) or to have any prior knowledge of tax.
You may find it useful to take Mathematics or a Mathematics-based subject as to become a tax accountant, you would complete the ACA as part of the apprenticeship. There is however no obligation to do so and it will not affect your chances of getting in if you don't!
We also have a work experience programme for Year 12 students which I would recommend you apply for when you are eligible as this can also help you secure a place on the apprenticeship scheme, whilst getting experience in Tax. The details can be found here: ey.com/uk/careerstarters
I hope this helps, but do let me know if you have any further questions!
