For EY i think out of the Big4 it has a great balance. There are times you will work long hours, however each team within tax is very supportive. I have just started my role in tax and we are in busy season right now, but they are great at allocated enough work for us to learn about the business but also not feel overwhelmed. Personally i work specifically in corporation tax which i find quite interesting to help companies with tax planning. We have a new legislation which has come into place which is probably the most difficult to get our heads around as its still a new thing! But thats also what keeps it interesting :)
That sounds really good! May I ask did you apply for the tax graduate programme and did you get any tax-related technical questions in interview please? Thanks!
i applied for the summer internship but the grads i am with now applied for the graduate position but there was nothing tax technical it was more why you were interested and also more on your general knowledge of ESG and AI etc. any hot topic!
Lovely! are there chances to rotate in different tax sub service lines before settling in one line?
if you apply on the graduate scheme you are assigned to that team during the contract period, if you apply for the internship it is similar but you can make a case to change lines, but it's not common to do so. Once you complete the training period you can do secondments in other teams. we dont do rotation as it takes a while to learn the process and each team is very different, so you wouldn't get the most out of your time if you kept changing teams as there are quite a lot in tax!
Hello Esha, a quick follow-up question—when you say 'the team,' are you referring to FS, UK&I, or a more specific team?
more specific. i dont think you'll be allowed to change between FS or UK&I, but within tax there is operational, global compliance & reporting, indirect, international. I'm in FS so can't confirm this for UK&I but even within that there are sub-service lines depending on the type of clients you work with.
Thank you Esha! Is there a place that we can know what different teams we have in tax?
you get randomly assigned a team, but if you are talking about sub-service lines that is also randomly assigned, but there is a lot of opportunity to work with other clients - you just have to ask!
